Fighting for relevance in a world trained to scroll past suffering

Published on June 16, 2025

We live in a time when attention is both currency and weapon. Civil society isn't just fighting for resources; we're fighting for relevance in a world trained to scroll past suffering. The challenge is no longer just what we say; it’s whether we’re heard.

This is not merely a communications crisis. It’s a power one.

Increasingly, nonprofits are being asked to choose between neutrality and narrative, between the politics of funding and the politics of truth. But what if that’s the wrong framing altogether? What if our ability to speak with clarity, courage, and strategic intent is one of the most underused tools we have in building sustainable impact?

Voice is a form of capital. If we don’t steward it with the same rigour we apply to financial planning or programme design, we risk losing the trust - and the transformative potential - of the communities we exist to serve.

This month, our focus isn’t just on speaking out. It’s on reclaiming language as a tool for justice. It’s on ensuring that communications isn't a veneer, but a form of strategic and ethical leadership.

What Fundraising Online: #FRO2025 Taught Us About Speed, Strategy, and Community

When more than three thousand fundraisers, campaigners, and nonprofit leaders gathered for #FRO2025, the energy was unmistakable: urgency, yes, but also agency. Our sector isn't waiting for transformation; it's building it. Here are just a few of the trends we saw emerging:

  • Speed is now ethical: The ability to mobilise quickly and authentically builds credibility.
  • WhatsApp is a core channel: Particularly in Global Majority countries, WhatsApp is reshaping how we connect with donors and communities.
  • Ethical AI requires intention: It must amplify our values, not just automate outputs.
  • Acquisition is about relationships: Donors expect more than a transaction, they want meaning and trust.
  • Community-led is donor-led: The most powerful campaigns are the ones where those impacted lead the way.
  • Crowdfunding is civic action: It is about ownership, visibility, and values.
  • The real trend is purpose: Tools come and go; clarity of values endures.

Narrative isn't just what we say, it’s how we lead.

In this moment of noise, distraction, and distortion, reclaiming the narrative means aligning our words with our values and using our voices as tools for justice, not just communication.

Whether you're showing up in your local community, shaping global campaigns, or simply finding your voice in your everyday work, you are part of this collective effort to speak with power, not just volume.

So, let’s keep listening deeply, speaking bravely, and building together.
